Nikon sb600 speedlight is it compatable with canon eos 40?

  • No the power rating is different and you can cause damage to your electronics if you try it.

  • A rule of thumb with regard to nikon/canon speedlight compatibility is, you can use a canon speedlight on a nikon SLR, but you can't use a nikon speedlight on a canon SLR. This is all due to triggering voltage. Nikon's trigger voltage is much higher, therefore you can use a lower voltage [canon] speedlight on a high voltage [nikon] hotshoe, but not a high voltage [nikon] speedlight on a low voltage [canon] hotshoe. I have an older canon 540EZ speedlite that I used on my nikon D80, before I got the nikon SB-600 I use now. I looked up my cameras triggering voltage and compared it to the canon speedlite's max voltage. In my case, it worked. All I had to do was tape off the TTL terminals on my nikon's hotshoe (to prevent shorting).

But in your case, I would NOT recommend using a nikon speedlight on your canon SLR. You could fry the circuitry that controls flash exposure, and like any other integrated system (like the TV/VCR combos), you could trash the whole camera by losing one part of its functionality. At this point, the only thing you could try is firing the speedlight off shoe by using a hotshoe-to-PC sync adapter, or on shoe with a hotshoe voltage regulator like those made by wein, for your specific model camera. The wein adaptors have their own voltage steppers that can safe your cameras hotshoe from any speedlight.

    Here's a page I found, quite quickly:

    Also, try googling this phrase:

"Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe Voltage Regulator"

You'll see lots of sites either selling them, or reviewing them.

You may want to do a bit more research on what will work for your specific camera, it'll take some time but the info is out there.

Also try these links for more info on off shoe triggering:

  • You might be able to use it but you'd have no TTL compatibility. Its always better to use Canon products with Canon and Nikon products with Nikon.
