AC Club vs BA WTP

  • I am considering traveling to Vancouver from Heathrow and am stuck as to go with Air Canada with their club service or with BA in world traveller plus. I have always used BA as I think their service is good and the standard of planes is excellent.

The advantage i can see is that Air Canada let you use the first class lounge where as BA only offer bigger seats.

The price is a little more on BA so it is a difficult call for me hence the question. Any comments from those with experience of both or either would be great.

I have posted in the BA forum and it seems that AC don't have individual IFE which I do love on BA but AC offers MUCH larger seats too.

    Again any thoughts greatully received.

  • AC Club is a much more superior product to WTP(glorified economy seat with more legroom) period.

I think WTP is a great choice IF the price is right, but in this case, it is more expensive than going in AC Club Class. A no brainer, if you ask me. Go with AC all the way.

  • The IFT bussing was a nuisance and I wish AC could arrange a separate bus for J and S passengers.

when travelling J insist that Y pax sit at the back of the bus... :p

Actually not quite true. The seats are of a different wider design - on a 777 WT+ there are only 8 abreast rather than 9 in WT, the recline is better and the footrest comes up higher. Legroom is about 15cm more than standard WT (and standard WT legroom is truly dreadful, believe me).

One downside of the WT+ seat is if you are lucky to have a free adjacent seat(s), the armrests do not lift up :td:. Found that out to my annoyance on an LHR-DXB overnighter this year when I had a whole row of 4 that I could do absolutely nothing with

So I would guess they are broadly comparable in the case of the seats but BA scores on the IFE. Personally I would chose AC as the IFE is irrelevant as I watch DVD's on my laptop but the key difference is BA only give 25% of miles on the cheaper seats and NO status points. IIRC, AC gives you both unless you on the very, very cheaper fares.

  • AC's planes with club seating are generally very old and the seats are worn. The seats themselves are AC's domestic business class configuration, hence the distinction between Club and their business product, Executive First. In general these cabins look very tired and are not a nice environment in which to spend 10 hours. You are right about the absence of personal IFE; there is just a screen in the cabin. I haven't actually experienced a Club flight, only these cabins / seating on domestic flights, so I can't comment on the service, meals, etc.

Personally I'd make the decision based on which airline you have or are likely to reach frequent flyer status (Gold or Silver with BA, Prestige, Elite or Super Elite with AC). WTP is an OK product, although you don't get a huge amount of room, but as you say the standard of their planes is, for now, better than AC.

  • AC has the best IFE..... EN ROUTE!!!

  • I flew AC Club from ZRH to YYZ recently. The equipment was a B767 with 4 rows of 2x2x2 typical NA business class seat pitch and width. The interior of the aeroplane of my particular flight was actually in reasonably good shape for its age. A hot lunch was served. I did not see what was served in Y but it appeared to be the same offering except the portion was larger in ACC. We also got ice cream for dessert. Other amenities included personal Dasani bottled water, J class pillow and blanket as well as a daylight flight J amenity kit. The snack before landing in YYZ was pizza and was exactly the same as Y.

There was no PTV IFE, just big screen movie.

There was also no power outlet for PC and there was only one toilet which may be an issue on a full flight. My flight was 9 hours gate to gate and ACC was half full, so it was okay.

I used Swissport business class check in, my baggage was priority tagged and was invited to the Star Alliance lounge. However, AC operates out of the E terminal and the *A lounge is in B terminal. So I used my Diners Club card at the Lounge Bellevue in E terminal instead, closer to the gate.

On my particular flight, the in-flight service was satisfactory. The FA's came around a few times during the flight asking for drink orders. The YYZ IFT bussing was a nuisance and I wish AC could arrange a separate bus for J and S passengers. First off the aeroplane but has to wait for all the Y passengers to fill up the bus, ending up at the end of the queue at immigration. Baggage delivery was surprisingly fast too. From the moment I boarded the shuttle bus at IFT to my limo home in less than 30 minutes.

For the premium above the economy fare that I paid, I consider it good value for money. The only “complaint” that I have is the degree of seat back recline. If the person in front of you decided to fully recline the seat, you will be totally immobile. You will not be able to open the tray table and watch your own DVD on your PC as BOH suggested. You will not be able to have your lunch unless the person in front of you agrees to pull up the seat back as a courtesy. In my case, there were two AC employees sitting in front of me who decided to skip lunch and sleep. They gave me a “dirty look” and couldn’t care less. Fortunately, the flight was not full and I was able to move to another seat. Therefore, a word of advice, select the bulkhead row and you will not have this problem. AC should adjust the degree of decline.

Yes, I received 25% COS bonus.
