UA flyer shopping for first AC flight, YHZ-YYT. What do I need to know?

  • Just ran a flight search on UA.bomb. Out of curiosity, I priced out my itin in 3 classes of service.

    Lowest fare=$192
    Biz=$1600-something
    First=$250

    Huh?! How does that work? Continued on with the dummy booking and saw that it's booked in A. Raced here to this forum for a list of fare classes. Nice sticky, BTW. Ohhhh, A is Tango Plus. Worth the extra $60? As far as I can tell my MP account won't gain anything more.

    Load-wise, what can I expect on weekdays the last half of May?

  • There is no first class in any of the AC flights. Flights to YYT have been getting really full. Back in November, they were flying YYZ-YYT with CRJs. AC smartened up and put back the 319 and 320 after seeing the loads.

  • That is certainly not accurate. Take a look at the sticky at the top here on the different fares. Tango plus gets you EQM miles on AC and UA. I would advise to book via the AC website.

    I agree with using the AC website, there are some very good prices on that route on aircanada.com right now for mid May. If the status miles are important (about 550 each way), pay the extra $30 for Tango Plus, if not you can throw then away and buy a Tango fare. If you don't get advanced seat selection, check in online 12 hours before flight to ensure you have a seat.

  • A fare is Economy, called Tango Plus. The only benefit for you is the advanced seat selection, which to me is not worth $60.

    Before you book, you can consider the other two airlines flying the same route. Westjet and Canjet. You need to go directly to their websites to check for correct prices.

  • Thanks for your replies. :)

    I need to figure out the pros and cons of how to book this itin. More variables than I've ever had to think about, EQMs being most important. As far as *A goes, I've only flown one non-UA segment.

    Yeah, I was surprised they don't fly CRJs on this route, but I'm finding out St. John's isn't exactly the little sleepy fishing village I thought it was. (No offense, anyone.)

    I'll go over to the UA forum to see what they have to say.

    Can I assume that the booking was made on UA website and not AC. If so, then fare class A might not equal tango status. You would have to check the fare rules or phone UA to find out the exact fare rule details.

    If booked on ac.com then the tango, tango+ fare rules apply. On AC.com, after getting to the flight and fare selection screen the fare types are explained by clicking on the fare name.

    For UA flyers such as the OP, expect to get 50% miles on Tango fares, however I am unsure wheteher UA/AC would grant status/qualification miles and make the segment count towards. The UA board might yield better results, alternately maybe some canadian royalty ;) will check in with the answer.
